3 Budget friendly advices

for college students
in Long distance relationship
(with useful links)

So we all heard about this story from our friends, or, we are the one going through this:

I’ve been dating my SO for some time and I really like him/her. Now I have got an exchange/ internship opportunity in another city/ country. I take this relationship seriously and I really want to make efforts to let it work. But…”

But… we all know the coming up struggles.

We are college students, maybe on a student loan, maybe on shortage of financial resources that don’t allow us the luxury to buy a tickets every one month and fly through half of the country (or the world) to meet up in person with our SO.

No one wants to break up for this reason, and in fact, no one has to.

Here is are of practical “hows” that make you go on your trip in a worry free way:

1.  Why not be in the same city (and maybe earn extra money) ?

According to statistics, the maximum recommended period for long distanced couples to be separated in no more than three months. However, what if my exchange program or my internship is much longer?

Why not encourage your SO to take a look at the internship opportunity in your destination country, so you will be exploring the new world together? There is plenty of useful career opportunity websites for undergraduates to find a job in other cities or countries, depending on your destination. In the end, it would be an amazing experience for him/her too, as well as a great highlight for his/her curriculum, and not to mention extra money.

www.Indeed.com is one of the world’s largest website for job listing. It offers worldwide job and internship opportunities. Maybe there’s something interesting in your SO’s city!

Similar to Indeed.com, glassdoor.com is also one of the most useful job search engines in the world. It also has salary information about the company. Check it out, maybe the salary in your SO’s city is better than your current one.

Useful website if your SO is currently in Aus.

2. Mid point adventure: exciting and money saving

So you have finally decided to give the long distance relationship journey a try. After several “me returning home” and “he/she coming to my city”, it has started getting boring, and you both want something more exciting yet money saving, for the next mid term break, or just for a random weekend get away.

Whatshalfway and meetways are useful websites offering quick calculation of the mid-point of your locations. The work specially well if you are in one country or one continent within driving distance. Extra bonus: saving energy in scooping for the next trip destination.

The website Tripmatch is specially functional if you are in living in different continents. It collect the cheapest flights based on both of your locations of origin and the expected travel dates. Sometimes it gives big sales that are not usually available for one destination flight, so, take advantage 🙂

3. Free and simultaneous experiences

Online courses are great choices for you to learn and have fun together in a free way. On coursera.com, for example, you can choose a lot of interesting courses from universities all of the world with certification. It’s free, time deserving and, of course, good to put on both of your CV.

Another side advantage of getting into a long distance relationship is that finally, you got a chance to convert your SO into a gamer. What if my SO didn’t like playing online games? Guess with the physical distance, a virtual world seems to be a pretty attractive alternative. What kind of game is a good try? Well, why not start with the one that you are playing already ? 🙂
